CURRENT EXHIBITION

Exhibition Title: Birds Season 3
Artist:  Kate Elsey

Kate Elsey (b.1969, Perth) is an artist inspired by her unwavering love for nature, expressed through intricate landscapes and colour forms of abstract expressionism.

Recently confined to her home, Kate created this series of abstracted ink and paint musings in a sketch pad. They illustrate the archetypal structure of birds, either imagined or inspired by the bird life abundant in the backyard outside of her studio.

The titles of her bird series reflect Kate’s humour & connection to form. The Thinker with his beak to wing, references Rodin’s famous sculpture , My Day Out sees an adventurous bird in a paper boat, Lady Duck is dressed in a petticoat of feathers, while the jaunty wing of Mortar and Pestle bird suggest a pestle ready for action.

Kate Elsey’s work is at once greatly sensitive and emphatic. Kate’s practice is supported by a particular empathy for the survival of life in perspective to her own. She is absorbed in the natural world and the significance of our co-existence and through this lens she creates tributes shaped by personal experiences.
“From travels to nature, I sketch the elements I see and feel. In the studio it’s me, the sketch book or the linen, music, paint and the moment that make my image. It begins with paper, a black pen or a stick, and then a spot near the bush to sit and observe.”
